Australian Army (ADF) Twin Otter Airframes Page 2

VH-OHP

This airframe acquired in 1997 is known to have worn both the 'White' and 'Buff' schemes throughout it's period with the ADF. There is a photo of the 'White' scheme at https://www.airhistory.net/photo/243642/VH-OHP (another site that does not allow reproduction of it's images).

VH-OHP in it's 'White' scheme, details same as the previous drawing of VH-HPT in these colours.

Later VH-OHP was repainted in the 'Buff' scheme, the photos do show a small variation in that at one stage it had Nat Metal spinners and later they were repainted 'Buff'. My drawing with the Nat Metal spinners is based on Airliners Net Photo 663177 (you guessed it we cannot reproduce it).

Airframe overall 'Sand/Buff' (Taubmans Oak Buff T12 60.C8 is a very close match - see the net), deicing boots on wings & tailplanes, areas on engines and wings to hide the exhaust stains and 'ARMY' titles are Black. Spinners are polished Nat Metal. 'Jet A1' plaques near the refuelling points are Black with White text. ADF badge on the tail is a burnished Bronze colour on a darker Browny Sand patch. The very front of the nose also has a Black area.

Some may remember the magnificent model of VH-OHP made by IPMS (NSW) member Alan Withers. Images of it may be seen at https://imodeler.com/2016/05/dhc-6-twin-otter-vh-ohp-173-sqn-aaac-oakey-qld-2000. Alan used Hawkeye Decals set AA-04 with the Matchbox kit. They are still available from Hawkeye at https://www.hawkeyemodels.com.au/wp-content/themes/hawkeyemodels/contents/Site.htm for the cost of $8.

Surprisingly the only models of the DHC-6 are the venerable Matchbox (later Revell) kit in 1/72 plus a fairly crude rendition that is virtually a vacform released by Modelcraft (an image can be seen here https://www.aviationmegastore.com/de-havilland-dhc6-twin-otter-no-decals-modelcraft-canada-dhc6-aircraft-scale-modelling/product/?action=prodinfo&art=118213) which was heavily criticised at the time of release. Surely it is time for someone to do a better model of this very popular type.
